How I Handle Song Requests
Hey Party People!
One of the questions I’m asked most often by clients and guests is, “Do you take song requests?” The answer is… Yes, but I’m selective. Here's how I approach requests to keep the music flowing and the vibe just right.
Client Requests: Your Wish Is My Command
If the request comes from the client—the Bride or Groom, Bar/Bat Mitzvah child or parent, or the CEO of the company—it’s an automatic yes. No questions asked. If you’re the one hosting the event, I’m here to make your vision come alive!
Guest Requests: A Balancing Act
When a guest makes a request, I follow a simple process by asking myself the following questions:
Do I know (and have) the song? If so, great! Move on to Question 2. If not, I usually can’t play it—though I’ll try to have a wide variety of music on hand to avoid this.
Does it fit the vibe of the party? If it fits, I’ll respond enthusiastically, “You got it!” and add it to the lineup. If it doesn’t fit, I’ll kindly decline and ask if they have another suggestion that aligns better with the party’s energy.
For those songs that leave me on the fence, I turn to the guest of honor: “Ask the host!” This not only lets them make the final call but also gives me even more insight into their preferences.
The Bottom Line
Music is the heartbeat of any event, and requests can be a fun way to keep guests engaged and excited. That said, my ultimate goal is to ensure that the music reflects the client’s vision while keeping the dance floor alive.
So yes, I take requests—but with a little finesse to keep the party’s energy flowing smoothly. At the end of the day, I’m here to create the right soundtrack for the event, and to make everyone happy, clients and guests alike!
